IF YOUR CHARACTER OF CHOICE ORIGINATED FROM A VIDEO GAME, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO APP THEM.

IF YOUR CHARACTER OF CHOICE ORIGINATED FROM AN ANIME/CARTOON/MANGA/COMIC/MOVIE/TV/BOOK/RL, ECT. YOU PROBABLY WON'T BE ABLE TO APP THEM.

NO: Captain Falcon from the F-Zero anime (yes there is an anime)

YES: Sora from Kingdom Hearts
NO: Goofy from Kingdom Hearts

VISUAL/LIGHT NOVELS MADE BY VIDEO GAME COMPANIES ARE COOL TOO.

WEB-BASED GAMES ARE HANDLED ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS.

Mods reserve the right to reject characters from internet games based on whether or not we feel there is enough game content to constitute an actual character. No robot unicorns or angry birds!

WHAT ABOUT "BLANK SLATE" CHARACTERS, LIKE MMO CHARACTERS, POKEMON TRAINER OCS, OR GAME PROTAGONISTS WITH MULTIPLE STORY PATHS?

YES we allow them! Game protagonists with multiple story paths generally still have a set canon story to follow. Some players even go so far as to write down their particular version of the character's story path to help keep things straight (example). Instances like that, we may not ask you to go that far into detail, but hitting on key points in your character's custom history, especially as how it would affect their personality, would be what we're really looking for in a potential app.

Other "OC-like" characters we probably will ask you to go into much more detail with their history and personality. These will be taken as fandom OCs and we do evaluate their apps a little stronger than a canon character's. Please see our Application Guide for more details, or take a look at other applications we've accepted to get an idea of what we're looking for.

DUPLICATES?

GENERALLY NO, but with certain exceptions! Which we will take on a case-by-case basis. For example, we allow duplicate Pokemon and Link in all his different incarnations (and subsequently most recurring Zelda characters) are fair game, since they are technically different characters and come with different canons. There could be Wind Waker Link along side Twilight Princess Link as well as Skyward Sword link here. Snake from Metal Gear Solid and Snake from Metal Gear Acid would also be another good example. What we do not allow are cross-medium duplicates.

WHAT ABOUT "AU" VERSIONS OF CHARACTERS, like genderswaps or...?

Generally NO, unless they're an official AU (ex: again, Solid Snake from Metal Gear Acid, or Tachibana Ginchiyo from Pokemon Conquest), which we may accept under our "certain duplicates" ruling. In those cases, we would by far and large prefer it if you apped from their original canon storyline first. If someone had already apped Tachibana Ginchiyo from SW3 into Smash, then we would feel more comfortable reviewing her from Pokemon Conquest as a possible duplicate. We are willing to make exceptions though, just ask! If you really want to app an AU over the original just PM us and ask, we'll probably be cool with it!

Things like genderbenders and fan-created AUs we also generally don't accept but again, we are willing to make exceptions since we're aware that line can be very blurry. Don't be afraid to ask!

The only "official" AUs we do not accept are (and I know this will sound weird but just bear with me) SMASH BROTHERS ones, and this only applies to characters who have canons already. For example DO NOT app Samus having a history of running around SSE looking for her Power Suit and rescuing Pikachu. App her from the Metroid universe instead.

You are however, quite welcome to app say, a Towtow or Duon or other characters unique to the Smash Brothers universe.

CAN I APP TWO CHARACTERS FROM THE SAME CANON?

You are allowed to app multiple characters from the same canon, but please do not monopolize the CR that may result from that. For example, you could app Teddy from Mother and the Mecha-Drago from Mother 3 because they could easily exist together with minimal interaction expected, but apping Fox and Falco from Starfox would not be cool since they have strong CR attached. A little munsterbation is okay here and there, but if you think your character is going to be interacting with your other one all the time, best to not app them and give someone else that chance. It'd be more fun playing with someone else anyway, wouldn't it?

IN GENERAL...

We may make certain exceptions since we're aware there's a lot of gray area and back and forth between some mediums. If you're unsure if your character falls under these circumstances, grab a mod or ask on our reserve page. We'll handle uncertainties on a case-by-case basis!

You can use anime screen shots or real life play-bys or whatever your heart desires for icons and other visuals, that's fine with us. You may also use cross-medium for influence or inspiration in your apps, as we realize video-games often neglect details that anime or manga might expand upon, but do not app directly from cross-medium. Use your video game canon resources as much as you can first before you start dipping your toes into outside influence and headcanon to fill in the holes left behind.

Also as a general note... we really don't know how the hell you can get a compelling, playable character out of a game like Tetris, Nintendogs, Wii Fit, Big Brain Academy or something like that, and we don't recommend trying. But hey, maybe you can surprise us.
