[APPLICATIONS - 2014-2015]

APPLICATIONS FOR THE CURRENT WEEK ARE REVIEWED FRIDAYS.

UNLESS THERE IS A DELAY... which we'll typically announce. There are no application cycles in Smash! Send in applications whenever you want.
Note: We do not review apps in chronological order, but last-minute applications submitted at the buttcrack of midnight Friday might not get reviewed until the following week, so please be patient.

If you want to make sure no one else apps the character you are thinking of, head on over to the reserves first.

Before you apply or hit "post"...

  • Read our rules. Acceptable Series, FAQ and Premise couldn't hurt either.

  • Take a look at our application guidelines! This outlines what we expect in an application, and gives some inspiration and pointers if you're having trouble!

  • Look at the taken list to make sure the character you want isn't already taken.

  • Copy and use the application form that fits your character, whether they are returning, getting an update, or are brand new.

  • Spell check, spell check, spell check.

  • You may post a link to your application or post it in comment chunks. DW has a maximum character limit of 16,000 per comment, so that's quite generous and you'll probably be able to fit your app in just one or two comments! Here is a handy character count checker to see if that's the case.

  • You may rehash old applications or samples so long as YOU are the one that wrote them. We may ask for a new, more setting-applicable sample, or if we are unclear on the character's voice/personality, however. If you plagiarize, you will be banned.

  • Pokemon are allowed only two per player, and no more than three of the same kind at the same time.

Re: Alice Margatroid | Touhou Project

[personal profile] dollsinpseudoparadise 2014-03-12 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Backstory: Alice Margatroid, created within the palace Pandaemonium within the world known as Makai, the realm of demons. She was considered to be the daughter of the world's creator and ruler, Shinki, the Beautiful Demon, and was hailed to be the heir to the realm around her, where demons flocked and flourished. From childhood, Alice was lavished with anything she wished for, but the young girl quickly grew tired of such things. Detached from the world outside of the castle, she began to set rules and games for herself, from little things like writing in her journal without using certain words or letters to things such as limiting how much she can eat and keeping her walking at a very specific pace. Something to occupy her mind. When she expressed interest in learning magic, the young girl immediately pointed at puppetry and golem construction, what was considered to be a rather difficult field. To the young girl, it was another game to play, something so complicated that to even perform the most trivial tasks would become enough of a challenge to keep herself occupied during the silent days within Makai. She studied and read constantly, and was proud to find that she had found something that was truly gratifying to work on, and eventually animated her first doll, Josephine.

Throughout the years, Alice would begin to move outside of the palace, though upon leaving instantly she would be surrounded and goaded by the inhabitants of her world, often about issues and controversies circulating her mother and her absence to the rest of the world, and how the ruler seemed to care little about the world she had created. And during one incident, when Makai was invaded, Alice was attacked by an unknown magician and shrine maiden, and her pride was thoroughly insulted and confused. Margatroid was created as a beacon of the prosperity and future success of the world, and was tossed aside without much effort by the attackers. Furthermore, the people she fought never seemed as if they were demons at all, and in fact resembled more of her than any other resident of Makai, despite the fact that she should be a demon like the rest of the world. Discouraged by these events, and not wanting to deal with the negative attention of the population, Alice quickly opted to leave Makai to go to a neighboring realm Wonderland (Wonderland was a blanket term that referred to any location where magicians ruled in majority). There, she could fully master her abilities, potentially to be titled an official magician. While living in this realm, Alice would finally begin seeing the existence of species apart from her own. She had been surrounded by servants of her mother, and was never allowed to see the foreign ambassadors that would often converse with Shinki. She had never been exposed to people outside of demons. But while living within the Wonderland, Alice found people that were different in appearance, in nature, in history from her. While it was enlightening to the teenage apprentice, she also realized that she was never a demon from the beginning. She was a human, and had lived her entire life within a world of demons. Shinki, for some reason, had been lying to Alice for her entire life.

Her return home was celebrated as Alice had ascended to the official title of Maestro Puppeteer, but Alice wouldn't wait for the festivities to end, and immediately approached her mother the moment the two had time together. Why she was lied to her entire life, why Shinki would make her a human and what it truly meant to be the child of Makai. She learned that her entire childhood was fabricated by Shinki. Her closest companions, every servant she smiled to and laughed with, automatons with barely enough cognition to function without constant orders. Teachers were essentially recordings etched into dolls. Even her habit of creating games, her decision to move into puppetry, all choreographed by Shinki from behind the scenes by manipulating the tiny microcosm within Pandaemonium that Alice had lived in. Alice was a human being that was essentially bred to become a clone of Shinki. Specifically, a failed clone, ever since the magician decided to leave Makai. Her mother had admitted to a slight oversight when she allowed Alice to go outside the castle, claiming that eventually those outside walks would result in Alice's decision to leave, and thus Alice was no longer a perfect imitation. From that day on, Shinki decided that Alice would be allowed to make her own choices on what to do, what to become. She gave her the grimoire that the magician carries even to this day, The Grimoire of Alice, a tome that was created at the conception of the girl, supposed to be given when Alice was of age had she been raised perfectly, containing every spell that Shinki knew, every word of history of the world Makai, and the power to create a goddess.

A few nights after that meeting, the magician left Makai, claiming that she was going to go to a newly created realm called Gensokyo to procure rare magic compounds that form in the creation of a new realm, and how she would be using these to enhance her doll magic and contribute to the field of doll magic. Though, Alice simply wanted to grasp a new reality, she wanted to use the harsh new world to recreate herself, and fully detach herself from her artificial childhood. It was just another game. The only rule: Never do what Shinki did. She held the grimoire in her hand, but as part of the game she made, swore to never open it and use its contents, instead using it as a catalyst for her own magic.

She laid largely unknown, unseen of until about the time the 7th game, the Cherry Blossom Incident, one would say. While Alice largely could not care about the extended winter, she still approached and attacked the heroines Marisa and Reimu, the first two humans Alice had encountered when she was but a child within Makai. Though the two seem to have forgotten who she was, much to her annoyance. The magician engaged in combat to see if they were the same two as before, and upon verification, sent them on their way, snickering lightly at the fact that she was the only one that seemed to know who the main culprit was.

By then Alice was deep into her research. She was often deep in thought over magic theory and how it connected to dolls. How constructs and automatons could become more efficient, and other such things. As part of this, she decided to use the magic in the world to become a youkai, a being of magic, thus allowing her to tap into the magic of the world around her directly. She wasn't the only one doing such experiments. Another magician would soon enter the world and make home within the forest as well. The two often competed for the plants and quickly became rivals. That person was none other than the magician she fought twice before, Marisa Kirisame. To the more carefree Marisa, Alice was a fellow researcher, magician, and specialist. To Alice, Marisa was an annoying thief who had no respect for boundaries. Their relationship... remains unchanged since then, though they would certainly be seeing each other very often.

From then on, Alice began keeping a close eye on the incidents that were happening, starting with the Incident of Feasts, when people began to indulge themselves in both parties and fighting. Both eager for combat and also wanting to resolve the incident herself, Alice began investigating, though was rather disappointed with the ending. The culprit was a demon named Suika, and in the end she was one of the only few people that Alice was challenged by, and was called out on when Suika pointed out that Alice never actually fought anyone of significant power. This taunt would stay with her until the Imperishable Night Incident, when she would grudgingly work alongside Marisa to repair the eternal night. While it did absolutely nothing for her getting along better with Kirisame, it did prepare her for the next few incidents, one involving investigation work once again regarding a series of earthquakes throughout Gensokyo, and once again when she would assist Marisa via combat dolls.

After several of these largely annoying incidents, Alice became more interested in traveling again, for the sake of going to new areas. When an old associate from Wonderland invited Alice to request teaching at a place called Smash Academy, Alice took it with full eagerness, willing to join a place where she could experiment and potentially fight more.

Her current goals: Continue observation of all preset rules. Teach and use wages and all benefits for the third goal... Constructing the ultimate doll that can be implemented into any situation and strategy while always providing optimal results. Also, to write the research paper about the effects of cognition within a doll, and the proper implements of such a feature.

Anything Else?: She is always accompanied by at least two of her dolls, Shanghai and Hourai, and her dolls will often be moving across campus as part of Alice's work. They seem to have some form of personality, but Alice insists that they are not independent or cognizant at all.

In-Character 1st person sample:
It seems as if yesterday's lectures were rather... underwhelming. Unsurprising, even I could care less of the civil wars that happened within the earliest periods of Japan, and any information we do have is uselessly biased. Reminder to all students: Essays are due this Friday, and the examination on the following Monday. Today's lecture will cover the beginnings of the Yamato Clan, and the conflict between the Izumo and the Ise.

Game today: Gather.
-50ml of 100 proof alcohol
-Satin and/or wool. If I had any additional money, silk would have been a better option.
-Several plant samples. I didn't know that something as volatile and mandragora would exist within the nearby forests
-1 keg of gunpowder
-Wood, but we're not lacking in that at all.

Rules: Use only a prime number of dolls for all tasks. Increase number of dolls for every person that responds to this comment.

In-Character 3rd person sample:

Mansions didn’t seem to have too much of any bit of positive connotations within Gensokyo. There were only 3, arguably 4, Western style mansions that were officially known, and their owners were generally very unpopular and loathed. Yuuka’s mansion at the Garden of the Sun was practically unknown and inaccessible due to the nature of its sole(?) resident. And of course, no one in their right mind, human or youkai, would even consider going inside the Scarlet Devil Mansion and try to socialize with any of their incompetent, ridiculous, stubborn, and absolutely insane residents. From their annoying gatekeeper to the absurd maid to their elitist, inefficient, rotting, idiotic shut in of a magician, to the absolute mess of a master Remilia Scarlet and her abomination of a sister, the entire mansion was a mess to behold. Then there were the Prismrivers with their mansion, but the poltergeist mansion is rarely touched upon, typical of ghosts and musicians, to be honest.

And then there was Chireiden. Which, from what Alice last remembered since the incident regarding the nuclear birdbrain, was not well accepted. Its master was curt and had the unsettling ability to read minds and spellcards (rather inefficiently, as well. Doll Sacrifice was no where as effective as it should have been, though it definitely did show signs of modification on Satori’s side). The fact that the interior was no more or less a glorified zoo was also slightly off-putting. But it was something to investigate. Not just the Komeiji sisters and their odd abilities, but also the behaviors of the docile animals, and how the master of the underground palace seemed to be able to control them. In her grimoire, Alice specifically noted that beasts grow at a greater rate than most any familiar or construct, but at the same time also suffered from a lack of perfect synergy between the master and servant. Alice had always been a person who preferred a complete impossibility for disobedience or any opposition when it came to her constructs, sacrificing a bit of random potential for perfect precision. Though perhaps observing the behavior of the animals, and Satori’s “control” over them, Alice could rewrite some new papers on the matter.

She approached the main doors of the Chireiden, and rang(? Knocked?) the door(bell?). The way to Old Hell wasn’t necessarily unpleasant at all. Besides for perhaps the bridge troll, no it doesn’t matter what she really is she really only deserves that title, the puppeteer had a decent travel down. Either her reputation as one of the highest residents of Makai and the daughter of Shinki preceded her into even the furthest sectors of the demon world… or the youkai were trying to adapt to circumstances and opening up doors for outsiders. Probably the latter, though after her encounter with Byakuren, the magician would not be surprised if people did already know of her. Shanghai stayed close to Alice’s side as the two awaited for their return to the Palace of Earthen Spirits.
