APPLICATIONS 2016

APPLICATIONS FOR THE CURRENT WEEK ARE REVIEWED FRIDAYS.

UNLESS THERE IS A DELAY... which we'll typically announce. There are no application cycles in Smash! Send in applications whenever you want.
Note: We do not review apps in chronological order, but last-minute applications submitted at the buttcrack of midnight Friday might not get reviewed until the following week, so please be patient.

If you want to make sure no one else apps the character you are thinking of, head on over to the reserves first.

Before you apply or hit "post"...

Read our rules. Acceptable Series, FAQ and Premise couldn't hurt either.

Take a look at our application guidelines! This outlines what we expect in an application, and gives some inspiration and pointers if you're having trouble!

Look at the taken list to make sure the character you want isn't already taken.

Copy and use the application form that fits your character, whether they are returning, getting an update, or are brand new.

Spell check, spell check, spell check.

You may post a link to your application or post it in comment chunks. DW has a maximum character limit of 16,000 per comment, so that's quite generous and you'll probably be able to fit your app in just one or two comments! Here is a handy character count checker to see if that's the case.

You may rehash old applications or samples so long as YOU are the one that wrote them. We may ask for a new, more setting-applicable sample, or if we are unclear on the character's voice/personality, however. If you plagiarize, you will be banned.

Pokemon are allowed only two per player, and no more than three of the same kind at the same time.

Before you fill this out, and especially if you want to do a complete Character Relationship reboot, remember to talk with your canonmates! Fill this as soon as you can so we know everyone's canon standings, and any extra information that might be needed.

As always, everything will be taken on a case-to-case basis!

This is if you want to reapp a character you formerly played in Smash (and they currently aren't being played by anyone else)!

Thanks so much for your application! It all looks pretty great barring one small issue: Could we get a rewrite on the first person sample? The formatting you've used is more like a very dialogue heavy third person sample. If you can reformat it to use [action brackets] for his pauses and actions and lose the " marks, it would be just fine!

Yeah I'll never not get first person wrong! But I did the revision, sorry about that!

Hello, thank you for your application! There is a good start here, but we're going to have to ask for revisions for the personality and backstory. We're having a hard time grasping who Rene is as a character. What are her motivations, what are her fears, what makes her a compelling character? Our app guide has some tips on how to help flesh her out! It can also give you an idea about what we're looking for in backstories to help really drive home what makes Rene the character she is. A quality wiki link can also help supplement this, if one exists for her!

Hello! Thanks for the revision and it's a good addition. But there is a lack of substance overall for the character and we feel there could be more. An understanding of the character and what makes her stand out in her story is key. What made her become this way, what drives her personality, who is she amongst her peers and how she sees herself amongst them. The wiki is lacking and it is A-OK to headcanon so long as it doesn't contradict game-canon so that you can fill in what's not in the wiki.

Maybe there are other sources that you can extrapolate from? A manga perhaps? Thanks again and we're looking forward to seeing them here.

Unfortunately that's it. I WISH there was a manga! But I feel like I put those things in already, so I'm not sure what you're looking for...

Unfortunately we cannot accept this application as it stands. It is up to you to tell us her story and show that you understand this character, that way we can understand her character as well. Try expanding on her personality, and give us a better idea of her world and the game she's from. Assume your reader is canon-blind, what would they need to know?

Here are two examples of apps we've accepted in the past for characters that either don't have a huge on-screen presence, or gave us a very good look at their obscure game.
