[APPLICATIONS - 2014-2015]

APPLICATIONS FOR THE CURRENT WEEK ARE REVIEWED FRIDAYS.

UNLESS THERE IS A DELAY... which we'll typically announce. There are no application cycles in Smash! Send in applications whenever you want.
Note: We do not review apps in chronological order, but last-minute applications submitted at the buttcrack of midnight Friday might not get reviewed until the following week, so please be patient.

If you want to make sure no one else apps the character you are thinking of, head on over to the reserves first.

Before you apply or hit "post"...

  • Read our rules. Acceptable Series, FAQ and Premise couldn't hurt either.

  • Take a look at our application guidelines! This outlines what we expect in an application, and gives some inspiration and pointers if you're having trouble!

  • Look at the taken list to make sure the character you want isn't already taken.

  • Copy and use the application form that fits your character, whether they are returning, getting an update, or are brand new.

  • Spell check, spell check, spell check.

  • You may post a link to your application or post it in comment chunks. DW has a maximum character limit of 16,000 per comment, so that's quite generous and you'll probably be able to fit your app in just one or two comments! Here is a handy character count checker to see if that's the case.

  • You may rehash old applications or samples so long as YOU are the one that wrote them. We may ask for a new, more setting-applicable sample, or if we are unclear on the character's voice/personality, however. If you plagiarize, you will be banned.

  • Pokemon are allowed only two per player, and no more than three of the same kind at the same time.

In-Character Information

Name: Alice Margatroid
Game/Series: Touhou Project
Teacher/Student/Other: Teacher
Canon Point: After the events of Touhou: Hopeless Masquerade.
Age: 400, with the appearance of 25
Grade Level/Class Taught/Job: Teaching Japanese History and/or Combat & Strategy
Dorm or Living Arrangement: Dorm

Personality: Alice overall is a well mannered and polite, speaking with proper diction as often as possible. When guests appear, she always opens the door for them, offering the night to stay with food and a place to rest. She had discovered, when she first entered, that few people start with the basics of food, drink, and shelter, things that were essentials for living. She put it upon herself that a person should at least be offered these things, regardless of who they were, and that even in desperate times, a person should never sabotage or tamper with these necessities of life. Alice actually enjoys the company, listening to other people, real people and real conversations, was something she treasured more than anything else since her past. But most of the residents of Gensokyo tend to be caustic and frankly annoying at times, and so most conversations are usually laced with sarcastic insults and usually result in Alice wishing nothing more but for the other person to get acquainted with the heel of her shoes... but they were still something she considered to be enjoyable, and when a person was kind enough, she found them to be a good companion, and someone she could do without the normal harsh "jests" that usually accompanied conversations in this brutish land.

Alice continued to invest into this research, becoming exceptionally powerful and masterfully skilled with doll magic, too much in fact. She returned to Wonderland often, only to find disappointment when she found that there was little to do that would present too great of a challenge, only tedious paperwork. So rather, the magician began to play games once more. In daily life, she gave herself a specific set of conditions for each day, and rules to either accompany or complicate said conditions. She obsessed over efficiency, precision, perfection within her creations, and was proud of what she did, to a fault. As far as she was concerned, there were very few in the world of imbeciles she lived in that could match her level of skill, and thus established a new rule to enforce a competitive drive as inspiration to continuously improve: Never exert full force in combat; examine every enemy with meticulous analysis and only exert a little more power than her opponent and adjust when they would exert more. Thus, combat would become a game of strategy and wearing the opponent out, something she considered to be much more entertaining. When an opponent would successfully defeat her, it was usually because they managed to use their power more efficiently than Alice, and would outsmart her. Both very rare situations. In fact, she became so enthusiastic about her new found game, she began to actively desire fighting people, her speech and behaviors prideful and ostentatious by nature. Though the magician wasn't particularly violent or crude to people, asking her to fight will quickly prompt her to oblige.

dollsinpseudoparadise: She doesn't hate you, but she's preparing to if you mess up. (Neutral)

Re: Alice Margatroid | Touhou Project

[personal profile] dollsinpseudoparadise 2014-03-12 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Backstory: Alice Margatroid, created within the palace Pandaemonium within the world known as Makai, the realm of demons. She was considered to be the daughter of the world's creator and ruler, Shinki, the Beautiful Demon, and was hailed to be the heir to the realm around her, where demons flocked and flourished. From childhood, Alice was lavished with anything she wished for, but the young girl quickly grew tired of such things. Detached from the world outside of the castle, she began to set rules and games for herself, from little things like writing in her journal without using certain words or letters to things such as limiting how much she can eat and keeping her walking at a very specific pace. Something to occupy her mind. When she expressed interest in learning magic, the young girl immediately pointed at puppetry and golem construction, what was considered to be a rather difficult field. To the young girl, it was another game to play, something so complicated that to even perform the most trivial tasks would become enough of a challenge to keep herself occupied during the silent days within Makai. She studied and read constantly, and was proud to find that she had found something that was truly gratifying to work on, and eventually animated her first doll, Josephine.

Throughout the years, Alice would begin to move outside of the palace, though upon leaving instantly she would be surrounded and goaded by the inhabitants of her world, often about issues and controversies circulating her mother and her absence to the rest of the world, and how the ruler seemed to care little about the world she had created. And during one incident, when Makai was invaded, Alice was attacked by an unknown magician and shrine maiden, and her pride was thoroughly insulted and confused. Margatroid was created as a beacon of the prosperity and future success of the world, and was tossed aside without much effort by the attackers. Furthermore, the people she fought never seemed as if they were demons at all, and in fact resembled more of her than any other resident of Makai, despite the fact that she should be a demon like the rest of the world. Discouraged by these events, and not wanting to deal with the negative attention of the population, Alice quickly opted to leave Makai to go to a neighboring realm Wonderland (Wonderland was a blanket term that referred to any location where magicians ruled in majority). There, she could fully master her abilities, potentially to be titled an official magician. While living in this realm, Alice would finally begin seeing the existence of species apart from her own. She had been surrounded by servants of her mother, and was never allowed to see the foreign ambassadors that would often converse with Shinki. She had never been exposed to people outside of demons. But while living within the Wonderland, Alice found people that were different in appearance, in nature, in history from her. While it was enlightening to the teenage apprentice, she also realized that she was never a demon from the beginning. She was a human, and had lived her entire life within a world of demons. Shinki, for some reason, had been lying to Alice for her entire life.

Her return home was celebrated as Alice had ascended to the official title of Maestro Puppeteer, but Alice wouldn't wait for the festivities to end, and immediately approached her mother the moment the two had time together. Why she was lied to her entire life, why Shinki would make her a human and what it truly meant to be the child of Makai. She learned that her entire childhood was fabricated by Shinki. Her closest companions, every servant she smiled to and laughed with, automatons with barely enough cognition to function without constant orders. Teachers were essentially recordings etched into dolls. Even her habit of creating games, her decision to move into puppetry, all choreographed by Shinki from behind the scenes by manipulating the tiny microcosm within Pandaemonium that Alice had lived in. Alice was a human being that was essentially bred to become a clone of Shinki. Specifically, a failed clone, ever since the magician decided to leave Makai. Her mother had admitted to a slight oversight when she allowed Alice to go outside the castle, claiming that eventually those outside walks would result in Alice's decision to leave, and thus Alice was no longer a perfect imitation. From that day on, Shinki decided that Alice would be allowed to make her own choices on what to do, what to become. She gave her the grimoire that the magician carries even to this day, The Grimoire of Alice, a tome that was created at the conception of the girl, supposed to be given when Alice was of age had she been raised perfectly, containing every spell that Shinki knew, every word of history of the world Makai, and the power to create a goddess.

A few nights after that meeting, the magician left Makai, claiming that she was going to go to a newly created realm called Gensokyo to procure rare magic compounds that form in the creation of a new realm, and how she would be using these to enhance her doll magic and contribute to the field of doll magic. Though, Alice simply wanted to grasp a new reality, she wanted to use the harsh new world to recreate herself, and fully detach herself from her artificial childhood. It was just another game. The only rule: Never do what Shinki did. She held the grimoire in her hand, but as part of the game she made, swore to never open it and use its contents, instead using it as a catalyst for her own magic.

She laid largely unknown, unseen of until about the time the 7th game, the Cherry Blossom Incident, one would say. While Alice largely could not care about the extended winter, she still approached and attacked the heroines Marisa and Reimu, the first two humans Alice had encountered when she was but a child within Makai. Though the two seem to have forgotten who she was, much to her annoyance. The magician engaged in combat to see if they were the same two as before, and upon verification, sent them on their way, snickering lightly at the fact that she was the only one that seemed to know who the main culprit was.

By then Alice was deep into her research. She was often deep in thought over magic theory and how it connected to dolls. How constructs and automatons could become more efficient, and other such things. As part of this, she decided to use the magic in the world to become a youkai, a being of magic, thus allowing her to tap into the magic of the world around her directly. She wasn't the only one doing such experiments. Another magician would soon enter the world and make home within the forest as well. The two often competed for the plants and quickly became rivals. That person was none other than the magician she fought twice before, Marisa Kirisame. To the more carefree Marisa, Alice was a fellow researcher, magician, and specialist. To Alice, Marisa was an annoying thief who had no respect for boundaries. Their relationship... remains unchanged since then, though they would certainly be seeing each other very often.

From then on, Alice began keeping a close eye on the incidents that were happening, starting with the Incident of Feasts, when people began to indulge themselves in both parties and fighting. Both eager for combat and also wanting to resolve the incident herself, Alice began investigating, though was rather disappointed with the ending. The culprit was a demon named Suika, and in the end she was one of the only few people that Alice was challenged by, and was called out on when Suika pointed out that Alice never actually fought anyone of significant power. This taunt would stay with her until the Imperishable Night Incident, when she would grudgingly work alongside Marisa to repair the eternal night. While it did absolutely nothing for her getting along better with Kirisame, it did prepare her for the next few incidents, one involving investigation work once again regarding a series of earthquakes throughout Gensokyo, and once again when she would assist Marisa via combat dolls.

After several of these largely annoying incidents, Alice became more interested in traveling again, for the sake of going to new areas. When an old associate from Wonderland invited Alice to request teaching at a place called Smash Academy, Alice took it with full eagerness, willing to join a place where she could experiment and potentially fight more.

Her current goals: Continue observation of all preset rules. Teach and use wages and all benefits for the third goal... Constructing the ultimate doll that can be implemented into any situation and strategy while always providing optimal results. Also, to write the research paper about the effects of cognition within a doll, and the proper implements of such a feature.

Anything Else?: She is always accompanied by at least two of her dolls, Shanghai and Hourai, and her dolls will often be moving across campus as part of Alice's work. They seem to have some form of personality, but Alice insists that they are not independent or cognizant at all.

In-Character 1st person sample:
It seems as if yesterday's lectures were rather... underwhelming. Unsurprising, even I could care less of the civil wars that happened within the earliest periods of Japan, and any information we do have is uselessly biased. Reminder to all students: Essays are due this Friday, and the examination on the following Monday. Today's lecture will cover the beginnings of the Yamato Clan, and the conflict between the Izumo and the Ise.

Game today: Gather.
-50ml of 100 proof alcohol
-Satin and/or wool. If I had any additional money, silk would have been a better option.
-Several plant samples. I didn't know that something as volatile and mandragora would exist within the nearby forests
-1 keg of gunpowder
-Wood, but we're not lacking in that at all.

Rules: Use only a prime number of dolls for all tasks. Increase number of dolls for every person that responds to this comment.

In-Character 3rd person sample:

Mansions didn’t seem to have too much of any bit of positive connotations within Gensokyo. There were only 3, arguably 4, Western style mansions that were officially known, and their owners were generally very unpopular and loathed. Yuuka’s mansion at the Garden of the Sun was practically unknown and inaccessible due to the nature of its sole(?) resident. And of course, no one in their right mind, human or youkai, would even consider going inside the Scarlet Devil Mansion and try to socialize with any of their incompetent, ridiculous, stubborn, and absolutely insane residents. From their annoying gatekeeper to the absurd maid to their elitist, inefficient, rotting, idiotic shut in of a magician, to the absolute mess of a master Remilia Scarlet and her abomination of a sister, the entire mansion was a mess to behold. Then there were the Prismrivers with their mansion, but the poltergeist mansion is rarely touched upon, typical of ghosts and musicians, to be honest.

And then there was Chireiden. Which, from what Alice last remembered since the incident regarding the nuclear birdbrain, was not well accepted. Its master was curt and had the unsettling ability to read minds and spellcards (rather inefficiently, as well. Doll Sacrifice was no where as effective as it should have been, though it definitely did show signs of modification on Satori’s side). The fact that the interior was no more or less a glorified zoo was also slightly off-putting. But it was something to investigate. Not just the Komeiji sisters and their odd abilities, but also the behaviors of the docile animals, and how the master of the underground palace seemed to be able to control them. In her grimoire, Alice specifically noted that beasts grow at a greater rate than most any familiar or construct, but at the same time also suffered from a lack of perfect synergy between the master and servant. Alice had always been a person who preferred a complete impossibility for disobedience or any opposition when it came to her constructs, sacrificing a bit of random potential for perfect precision. Though perhaps observing the behavior of the animals, and Satori’s “control” over them, Alice could rewrite some new papers on the matter.

She approached the main doors of the Chireiden, and rang(? Knocked?) the door(bell?). The way to Old Hell wasn’t necessarily unpleasant at all. Besides for perhaps the bridge troll, no it doesn’t matter what she really is she really only deserves that title, the puppeteer had a decent travel down. Either her reputation as one of the highest residents of Makai and the daughter of Shinki preceded her into even the furthest sectors of the demon world… or the youkai were trying to adapt to circumstances and opening up doors for outsiders. Probably the latter, though after her encounter with Byakuren, the magician would not be surprised if people did already know of her. Shanghai stayed close to Alice’s side as the two awaited for their return to the Palace of Earthen Spirits.

Canon point: Post-Pokémon Black 2 & White 2

Age: 18
Grade Level/Class Taught/Job: Stillll a junior
Dorm or Living Arrangement: STILL IN THE DORM
Personality Changes (ie, some characters grow are are different based on where they are taken from. Please list any differences there might be compared to where they were taken before): There isn't much difference compared to the changes Chili has been slowly developing even in Smash Academy. He's grown to be quite a bit more responsible and motivated, and he's become a far better trainer than he used to be. He's grown more mature and capable, overall.

History Changes: To summarize, Chili went back home (in Smash Academy time) on March 1st. He was planning on staying for a visit - Cress left a while ago, and he missed seeing his brothers.

As Chili returned to Striaton City, his brothers told him that the gym leaders were corresponding with one another due to a resurgence in Team Plasma's activity. He decided to remain in the Striaton Restaurant with his brothers during this time because of the threat Team Plasma presented. Some time after this, Team Plasma mobilized in Opelucid City, and Ghetsis used Kyurem's Glaciate to engulf a great portion of Unova in ice. Striaton City was frozen over, leaving the triplet brother to do what they could to keep the people of their city safe.

The protagonist (Nate or Rosa, doesn't particularly matter) defeats Ghetsis, and upon defeating Ghetsis and Kyurem, the ice melted. EVERYTHING WAS SAVED, and Chili hung around for a bit longer to meet the hero and battle with them. After battling with the hero trainer, Chili decided to go back to Smash Academy for further training.

Re: Moderator Review

I actually accidentally began writing personality and history within the same segment when I first wrote it, so I guess when I broke the two up it was poorly sequenced. I'll be rewriting it entirely here. I don't know if I'll be able to go back through the whole app and fix run-ons, though.

Personality: Alice has never been in a precisely kind world, and she herself could never be truly considered as nice at all. In her eyes, most everybody can be described as an imbecile, a stranger, an absolute annoyance, or a mixture of the above. She's egotistical, and a compliment to her usually won't be returned with another compliment, but rather some sort of passive urging to go on. Try to play insults with her, even in a more playful manner, and she responds with concise, curt, and completely spiteful comments back, even if she's trying to be a bit playful with her words as well. Alice has a very strong tendency to be violent as well, as the common policy in Gensokyo has a tendency to drift towards a "Shoot, and I'll move" mindset thanks to the liberal and commonly used spellcard system.

She does tries her best to try and be polite with others, but that tends to fall short as well. When guests do come around, they usually come in when Alice is already well into some form of work, be it an experiment, redecorating, or planning and strategizing combat formations. She talks little because of it, answering questions concisely and responding to her guests. She does little work on her own, and rather uses her dolls, which are either dormant along the shelves of her residency, or floating about constantly. Although they carry a specific personality (Shanghai is energetic and like to move in elegant circles around things as if it was a fairy, Hourai is almost always dormant unless very precise jobs such as sewing are needed, and rarely says a word), the dolls eyes are blacked out and hollow, and their movements, despite Alice's every attempt, retain some form of stiff mechanical movement. Though Alice never saw it as disturbing, guests tend to decline her offer to stay. She never saw it as something bad, though. Rather, it was a bit of odd motivation for her to improve the fluidity of their movements.

This is all largely due to the fact that Alice has almost always seen people as a problem, rather than a solution. Not just because her usual residents are usually thieves, wanderers, or freeloaders, but also because Alice has had a firm belief that she never needed someone else's support or advice to solve her own problems. If something was difficult, it wasn't because she needed someone else, but because it was a challenge for her to become better and stronger, a mindset she had to carry in order to begin understanding the complex nature of doll magic. She doesn't quite hate the company, though, and a lot of times if you can catch her when she's resting from a long day, she'll be eager to make some effort for some small talk over a meal. But when some job has to be done, which is almost always for Margatroid, a lot of times she found people to be a hindrance, and some people tended to always be a hindrance regardless of when they approach her.

When she first tried living in Gensokyo, Alice made herself a game to use her dolls as little as possible and avoid conflict. She thought that fighting was a brute's game, and something that she would never need to sully her hands with. After the events of Perfect Cherry Blossom and Immaterial and Missing Power, she realized that the way fighting was managed in Gensokyo was based off skill and elegance, rather than pure raw power (most of the time. See: Marisa). In other words, fighting in Gensokyo was another way to show Alice's mastery of puppetry, skill, and poise. Alice actually became obsessed with the art of combat, making an endless series of strategies and tactics to put into fighting, doing every she can to optimize her dolls to absolute perfection. To her, fighting became synonymous with song, dance, and theater: It was a way of expressing herself. Combined with her eternal love for playing games with herself and giving herself limiting conditions, Alice is always eager for combat, and simply mentioning a spar is enough to drive her to demonstrate everything she knows.

At the same time, her doll magic has become a bit of a very ironic reminder of her past. Despite her hatred of an artificial life, the girl has found herself even more isolated a lot of times with her dolls, automatons. In fact, it could easily be said that her obsession with making her dolls as perfect as they can be is no different from her mother's attempts in the past. Despite the fact that she's constantly surrounds herself with a painful reminder of the world she was raised in, Alice has never once expressed any desire to switch her field of proficiency. Even though there are other fields of magic that are just as challenging, such as studies in alchemy or summoning magic, which she hand-waved as too simplistic. Just like with every problem in her life beforehand, she sees her studies as another game. That someday, she'll be better than Shinki, and never have to hear that ugly thought of becoming like her mother. It was her way of proving to the world and herself that a child's life and future isn't shaped or controlled by the world they're in, but rather by the choice she makes in that world.

Hello there! ( ^▽^ )ノ★

Please excuse me! I am looking for someone very important. I have come looking for my Master! ( *O*) I would like to know if any of you have seen him! I do not know what he looks like, but I picture that he is very tall, strong, cool, and... Well, I think he would also look a little scary, too. It would be for a good reason, though, I am sure! Master is very smart. ( ̄ω ̄ )

I can describe his voice! ✿ His voice is low and eerie with a baritone-to-tenor sound. (I'm sorry, I cannot precisely place it just yet. I heard it very briefly.) It makes me think of cornflowers in the center of creeping, black brambles. Isn't that so cool?! I heard of a phrase like that in a book once! I like it very much.

If you know where Master is, please tell me! I will remain here and search for him until I can find him. Please take good care of me, everyone! ( ノ_ _)ノ

In-Character 3rd person sample:
` Grandpa told me to sleep. ´
` Maybe I am doing wrong. ´
` Grandpa, is this right? ´
` ... I must find my Master. ´

-

Master must be here, so here he stands, boots perched atop railing and eyes downcast to the bustling academy below. He heard his voice, so he came, yet now, he cannot find him. Clear reaches that grim realization that, with 'Master' missing in action and unfamiliar territory in his wake, he is at a loss. Eyes scan those people beneath him — and how they look like little ants below, he thinks to himself — and watch for any sign of a gruff person that looks like Master, a person who stands above the rest.

Clear's heart threatens to sink to the bowels of his stomach and remain there, yet he stirs the optimism within and keeps it above all darkness, a ray of hope in the shadows. Grandpa liked that about him, he recalls, this personality he had adopted of unwavering joy and faith in life's finest.

Grandpa.

He cannot help but feel as though he is slighting him, albeit unintentionally. The man who took him in and cared for him, the man who loved him, the man who treated him like a human being and not... whatever he was, whatever he is now. He still remains uncertain of himself, what he's meant to be, what his purpose is in this life, what he is inside.

All he knows is that he is different from other people, and that this mask, this veneer protecting him from all of this world's worst, is necessary. Without this, he is nothing. Without this, he will be jeered at and mocked. Without this, he will be seen as nothing more than a monster.

He feels like a 'defect'. Why that word in specific comes to mind, he is uncertain, but what he does know is that he is simply inhuman, different.

He will never be the same, and he has accepted that.

That is when the sight of a hulking man, large, rippling with biceps that he swears are unending, and intimidating, comes into view. His blue hair and sweat-soaked wifebeater are yet more indications that this person is serious business, different from all the rest he has seen thus far.

There is no doubt, he decides, as he drops before him, the massive descent causing him to lose sight of a proper landing. He lands on his stomach and oh, does it ever hurt, but he knows that he is fine, that he will be fine. He lifts to his feet, his heart soars, and his smile is grand beneath that mask as he calls the name he has been yearning to since his awakening:

"I am here now, Master!"
